Celebrating Raksha Bandhan

Rakshak Bandhan is a Hindu festival that is celebrated in India and the subcontinent. The focus of this Hindu festival is to celebrate brother and sister relationships.

How Raksha Bandhan is Celebrated

Raksha Bandhan is celebrated on the 3rd August, the holiest month in the Hindu Calendar. On the day, sisters normally visit their brothers and also male cousins, who are considered brother in Hindu culture.

A special bracelet, called a Rakhi, is given to brothers on Raksha Bandhan. A Rakhi is normally made from colourful cotton thread that is tied around the brothers’ wrists which symbolise both protection and care. The Rakhi physically symbolises the knot of love and affection between sibilings.

These bracelets are then kept on for the rest of the year, essentially until they unravel or fall off. Indian sweets are also enjoyed on Raksha Bandhan and sisters will often be given a gift.

This special bond is also celebrated with brothers and sisters from afar with Rakhis being posted.
