Naan Bread

Ingredients

  • Self-Raising flour – 500gms
  • Salt – 7gms
  • Baking powder – 4gms
  • Sugar – 6gms
  • Milk – 100ml
  • Plain yoghurt – 50gms
  • Egg – 1
  • Water – 75ml
  • Cooking oil – 2tbsp
  • Nigella seeds – 1tsp
  • Chopped coriander leaves – 2tbsps
  • Fine chopped garlic – 1tsp
  • Grated cheese – 50gms
  • Melted butter – as required

method

Sieve the flour in a large mixing bowl, mix in the salt, sugar and baking powder.

In a separate container, mix the milk, yoghurt and egg and whisk well.

Add this mix to the flour and mix well, add water to make a soft dough.

Keep covered with a moist cloth and allow to rest for 10 minutes.

Knead the dough thoroughly, mix in the oil and knead again.

Allow to rest again for 30 minutes, divide into 120gms portions and shape into rounds, keep covered with a moist cloth and allow to rest for 15-20 minutes.

Roll out the dough into ½ cm thickness oval shapes.

For plain naan:            Spread the nigella seeds on top.

For garlic naan:           Spread the chopped garlic and coriander on top

For cheese naan:        Spread the grated cheese and chopped coriander on top.

Preheat a baking tray in the oven at 250 degrees centigrade.

Arrange the naan on the heated baking tray, bake for 6 minutes.     

Brush with melted butter.
